Octavia E. Butler's groundbreaking classic follows Dana, a young Black woman in 1970s California who is suddenly and inexplicably pulled back in time to a pre-Civil War Maryland plantation. There, she must repeatedly save the life of a white slaveholder's son whose survival, she realizes, is tied to her own existence. Trapped between two eras, Dana is forced to navigate the brutal realities of slavery while fighting to protect herself and return home. Genre-defying and unflinching, Kindred blends speculative fiction with historical reckoning to explore legacy, trauma, and survival in American history.
