The Round House is Louise Erdrich's powerful, National Book Award-winning novel set on a North Dakota Ojibwe reservation in 1988, narrated by thirteen-year-old Joe Coutts in the aftermath of a brutal attack on his mother. As his father, a tribal judge, struggles to bring the perpetrator to justice within a maze of overlapping tribal, state, and federal jurisdiction, Joe takes matters into his own hands, enlisting his friends in an amateur investigation that leads him from childhood into a much harder, more complicated adulthood. Blending coming-of-age tenderness with a searing exploration of justice, trauma, and Native sovereignty, the novel is by turns funny, devastating, and deeply humane. A landmark work from one of America's most essential literary voices.
